As part of the Art, Design Technology Faculty we offer every student an enriching experience of the Art, Design and Technological advancements including Graphics, Computer Aided Design and Manufacture. Our enriched curriculum enables students to reach their full potential and stretches imagination and capabilities.

Faculty Aims

Our aim as an Art, Design Technology Faculty is to ensure that students:

  • Understand the Design Process and understand links between Art, Design and Technology subject areas.
  • Are able to think creatively and produce innovative and imaginative design ideas, drawing on a range of skills and materials.
  • Are able to use a variety of media and ICT to develop and manufacture final professional designs, art pieces and manufactured products.
  • Use independent research and planning as effective tools to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of the different specialisms within our Faculty.

Art Overview:

Art is a creative and evolving subject delivered in purpose built Art rooms to all Key stage 3 and GCSE Art groups. Homework is set on a fortnightly basis to broaden pupil’s knowledge, skills and understanding of the artists and contexts explored.
The department are passionate about Art and encouraging pupils to reach their full potential in this subject.

Curriculum:

In Key Stage 3 pupils study Art for one lesson a week, and across the key stage cover a range of skills, addressing the fundamentals of tone, colour and artists who link to the themes. Art movements and cultural contexts are also studied to ensure students are aware of artistic influences over time and social settings.

Areas of focus include:

  • Drawing,  using tonal and mark-making techniques
  • Colour, understanding how to mix colours, using the colour wheel.
  • Printmaking
  • 3D
  • Painting
  • Mixed media

Artists: Hundertwasser, Picasso, Van Gogh, Braque, Aboriginal Art

At Key Stage 4 we offer GCSE Art where pupils explore a mixed media response by responding to a project theme and using artist and cultural influences.

Design & Technology Overview:

In Design and Technology pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. Students are challenged as individuals and members of a team to creatively solve problems they are presented with. Students have the opportunity to learn how to use a range of available technologies to create their design solutions, including workshop equipment and computer aided design programs to machine different aspects of their projects. All of our teachers are passionate about the subject and contribute a wide range of skills and experience. The Design and Technology curriculum develops essential skills and innovative approaches in developing the next generation of designers, chefs and engineers. We have three dedicated work spaces within the department; multipurpose workshop, graphics studio with high spec 2D and 3D software, fully equipped kitchen with 9 cookers and a textiles area dedicated for fashion designers of the future! In addition to this we also have a dedicated CAM (computer aided manufacture) suite equipped with; 2 laser cutters, CNC miller, dye sublimation printing machine (the ability to print onto woods metals and plastics) and a state of the art 3D printer.

Curriculum:

All students at Key Stage 3 study Design and Technology. It is through the combination of theory and practical that we aim to create independent problem solving students giving them the foundations towards options in Product Design, Food, Graphics and Textiles.

At the end of Key Stage 3 we offer a range of successful and popular courses to all students:

  • Smart Product Design Level 2 (GCSE Equivalent)
  • GCSE Textiles Technology
  • BTEC First Health and Social Care Level 2
  • NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Food and Cookery

Extracurricular Opportunities:

Our dedicated staff offer a range of further sessions during the week to further develop our students in a variety of areas.

Lego Mindstorms

Year 9 students have the opportunity to work with Lego Education to complete a range of challenges based around the theme of space. Students will be taking part in a number of activities organised by Lego Education including a trip to the Big Bang Fair as well as taking part in the competition final in June.

KMF Young Engineer of the Year

Year 10 students are given the opportunity to work with local companies and institutions such as Staffordshire University to complete a range of challenges in order to earn the converted title of young engineers of the year. Students are able to develop a range of skills as well as applying theory taught in lessons to real world situations.

Textiles

Key stage 4 students have the opportunity to develop awareness of the fashion and textiles industry by visiting the Clothes Show exhibition.
