Year 7

Setting occurs at the end of the third full week as a result of Key Stage 2 Sores and internal benchmarking tests. The year group is split into 2 bands. There is an able and talented set in the ‘S Half’ (called SA)
Maths, English and Science are set within the 2 bands.

Year 8

Maths, Science, English, MFL and Humanities are blocked into 2 half year blocks (S and H) and taught according to ability in that subject.
Setting occurs in all other subjects (with the exception of PE).
There is an able and talented set in the ‘S Half’ (called SA)

Students choose options in year 8 in readiness to start their GCSE/vocational courses in year 9. Students are placed in pathways with appropriate subjects that they can choose from.

Rationale/Notes

Excelling pathway:

  • Students will study 10 qualifications
  • All students will achieve the English Baccalaureate qualification by opting for at least one humanities and one language subject
  • Science Triology, Computer Science and additional French, Geography and History are available as discreet subjects for this pathway
  • Other open tier qualifications will be mixed classes with middle pathway
  • All students will study OCR national ICT or ECDL (with additional guided learning hours provided in addition to the curriculum model
  • All students with an average fine point score (KS2) of 4.9 and above will be placed into the Excelling Pathway

Aspiring pathway:

  • Students will study 10 qualifications
  • All fill the Ebacc Tier qualification slots and have the option to choose these qualifications.
  • These students can opt for the English Baccalaurate but this is a choice
  • Those with a real flair for computer science will be considered for this option
  • The open tier contains more qualifications in the Technical award category
  • Some open tier qualifications will be mixed with Excel pathway and where necessary the emerging pathway
  • All students will study OCR national ICT or ECDL (with additional guided learning hours provided in addition to the curriculum model)
  • All students with average fine point scores (KS2) between 3.9 and 4.89 will be placed in the Aspiring Pathway

Emerging pathway:

  • Students will study 9 qualifications
  • Study 2 qualifications in the Ebacc tier. One slot will be left empty
  • Some open tier qualifications will be mixed with middle pathway where necessary but every attempt will be made to ensure ability groups are maintained
  • Additional teaching hours to further develop reading and writing skills
  • All students will study OCR national ICT or ECDL with 5 hours per fortnight
  • Enrichment and employability qualifications, for example Duke of Edinburgh will be offered alongside this pathway
  • All students with average fine point scores (KS2) below 3.89 will be placed into the Emerging Pathway

Year 9

Maths, English and Science are split into 2 half year blocks (S and H) and taught according to ability in that subject.
There are 5 mixed ability option blocks. The options are spread across the 2 weeks and taught as 5 separate 1 hour lessons.

Year 10

Math and English are taught in full year blocks, enabling setting across the year. Science are split into 2 half year blocks (S and H) and taught according to ability in that subject.
There are 5 mixed ability option blocks. The options are spread across the 2 weeks and taught as 5 separate 1 hour lessons.

Year 11

Math and English are taught in full year blocks, enabling setting across the year. Science are split into 2 half year blocks (S and H) and taught according to ability in that subject.
There are 4 mixed ability option blocks. The options are spread across the 2 weeks and taught as 5 separate 1 hour lessons. ECDL is taught to all students. RE is taught as an additional option with 2 lessons taken from the ECDL curriculum time.
