Ofsted Inspection Report July

Message from the Principal

I am delighted to be able to inform you that as a result of a full Ofsted inspection at the end of last term (12th and 13th July 2016) Sandon is no longer a school that requires special measures. The news is however, much more positive in that we achieved ratings of:

Good for The quality of teaching, learning and assessment

Good for Personal development, behaviour and welfare

Good for Effectiveness of leadership and management

As you may be aware from our extensive press coverage, the 2016 GCSE performance at Sandon was outstanding. Unfortunately, in July the performance data which formed the basis of the judgement for Outcomes for pupils was 2015 GCSE data. Had we been able to call upon these results during the Ofsted inspection, we would have easily achieved a Good judgement for outcomes. Thus we can talk with confidence that we are now firmly a Good school.

Highlights from 2016 GCSE include:

  • 58% of students achieving 5 A* – C passes including English and Mathematics
  • 78% of students achieved A* – C in English, which is well above the national average
  • 61% of students achieved A* – C in Mathematics
  • 60% of students achieved A* – C in Science
  • 145 A* and A grades achieved by our students in GCSE subjects
  • 267 A* and A grades achieved by our students including Vocational Qualifications

These record breaking results make us the most improved school in the city and one of the most improved schools nationally.

“Determined and relentless leadership from the headteacher and senior leaders has led to rapid improvements in attendance, teaching, behaviour and pupils’ progress.”

“Leaders and staff form a united team who are committed to seeing the school improve.”

“Teaching has improved since the previous inspection and is now good. Pupils’ progress is improving as a result.”

“Teachers have increasingly high expectations of what pupils should achieve in lessons. For example, in mathematics, a subject that has historically been weak, expectations are much higher and pupils now tackle challenging topics and difficult problems from Year 7 upwards. Similar high expectations are evident in most subjects including English, History, French and Physical Education.”

“Attendance has improved considerably and is now close to the national average. Pupils behave well. They are courteous and polite. The school is calm throughout the day.”

“Pupils are smartly dressed and proud of their school. They are keen to do well and appreciative of the recent improvement in the quality of education they are receiving. They told inspectors that they are optimistic about their future and the school’s future.”

“Pupils are keen and eager to do well. They are kind to one another and they help and support their classmates in lessons.”

“The wide range of activities outside of normal lessons helps to develop pupils’ self-confidence and maturity.”

May I take this opportunity to thank you for continued support in being part of the transformational school improvement that has taken place since January 2015. Please also be aware that we are not complacent and we will continue to work hard, practice and make a determined effort to continue our journey of improvement.
