Pupils are not always aware that there is an order of working for calculations and assume that like a sentence, the calculation is carried out from left to right.

e.g. 5 + 3 x 2

Pupils may assume that the answer is 16 when the actual answer is 11. Order of operations is sometimes known as BODMAS
